About Goeff

Rep. Goeff Hansen has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for our families and communities, both as a private citizen and public servant. He has worked in a bipartisan manner to help stimulate job growth in Michigan, protect valuable local jobs, establish high standards in education, support early childhood development programs as well as important community service programs.

Rep. Hansen was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2004 and re-elected in November 2006.  He currently represents the 100th District, which includes Lake, Newaygo and Oceana counties.  

Goeff served on the Appropriations Committee for four years.  He served as Chair of the Agriculture subcommittee as well as Ranking Member.  He was also a member of the following Appropriations subcommittees – Higher Education, Transportation, General Government, and Human Services.

In Hansen’s current final term, he is a member of the following policy committees; Ranking Member of the House Commerce Committee; Agriculture; Urban Policy; and Tourism, Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation, respectively.

Goeff Hansen knows first hand the proud and prominent role of the agricultural industry in our community.  He has been a champion for Michigan agriculture in Lansing.  As past chair of the House Appropriations subcommittee on Agriculture, he has written budgets to provide funding in the areas of food safety, consumer protection, emergency management, economic development and plant/animal health.  As the current Ranking Member of the House Commerce Committee, Rep. Hansen is applying his small business background to develop policies that will help grow Michigan’s economy and create jobs. He's developed legislation that encourages job growth and will get our economy moving again.  House Bill 5202 encourages and supports small and start-up businesses by incentivizing entrepreneurial innovation and creativity. The plan is supported by the Muskegon Chamber of Commerce and the Mason County Growth Alliance.

Goeff also spent much of his first term fighting to keep the former Michigan Youth Correctional Facility (MYCF) open in Lake County and to save over 200 critical jobs in the region.  For two years, he worked with the Granholm administration, presenting numerous alternatives that would have allowed the facility to remain operational, protecting jobs and local tax base.  Despite its eventual closure, Goeff authored a new law that gave the facility’s owner the option to enter into a contract with the federal government or any other state for corrections services.

Goeff understands that a strong public safety presence is important to our local communities.  After the Hart State Police Post was closed in 2007 due to state budget cuts, he again worked with the Granholm administration to find a suitable solution.  Finally, in 2008 Rep. Hansen brokered an agreement to allow the State Police Post to reopen and continue providing critical emergency services to the area.

Hansen has received a number of awards and honors for his work in the Legislature, including the Legislator of the Year Award's from the Michigan Community Action Agency Association & Michigan Food and Farming Systems-MIFFS, Literacy Advocate Award from the Public Enrichment Foundation, Agricultural Advocate Award from the MI Agribusiness Association, Blue & Gold Award from the Michigan FFA Association, Legislative Leadership Award from the Michigan Soft Drink Association, and a Legislative Leadership Award from FiveCAP, Inc. as well as from The ARC/Newaygo County.

In 2006, he was selected by the Council of State Governments as a Fellow to the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development program.
